Another week has gone by and it’s already Friday at 5 p.m. And I’m just now sitting down to write my FollowFriday recommendations. The short version of the preamble…I do these in two sets:
- Groups: people who have interesting conversations with each other (and I recommend you follow the group)
- Introductions: people who are not currently talking to each other but who I introduce because I think their conversations might turn out to be interesting.
I do it this way because that’s what social media’s all about: the conversations. Here goes.
#FF Groups:
During the fall of last year I met Angel Magaña for work related reasons – he writes for LAist and I do PR. I asked for his Twitter handle and he responded with @Cheleguanaco. I promptly responded with: “Eres Salvadoreño?” And the rest is history. Angel and I have talked endlessly about all things we Salvadoreños like (including music and pupusas) and along the way dreamed of finding all of the Guanacos on Twitter. I confess he’s done most of the work. So here are some of the Salvadoreños he’s found: Marden Nochez (@nochez) Oscar Menjivar (@menjivar) and Claudia Del Cid (@cmdelcid). While we’re all living in different worlds we can always relate. Porque somos Guanacos, no?
The Milken Institute Global Conference is coming up next week (http://www.milkeninstitute.org/events/events.taf?eventid=GC10&cat=GC&id=274&function=detail). And I’m proud to say that two of my very good friends work there. Jennifer Manfre (@jenlmanfre) and Joe Meehan (@joemeehan) are two of the funniest and most intelligent people I know. And at this moment they are probably cursing me for giving them something else to read because they are working very hard at making that amazing conference happen next week. Follow along…and give them some words of encouragement next week, will you?
And…as some of you might know I’m working with the LatISM (Latinos in Social Media) crew to bring a conference to California. I’ve had the pleasure to meet with a really talented group of Latino movers and shakers here and across the country. And I’m really excited to work with this crew on the L.A. conference: Latino2 (http://latino2.com/). Here’s a Twitter list of the organizing committee: http://twitter.com/LatinoToo/latism-team and follow @LatinoToo if you’re interested in the conference.
#FF Introductions:
My friend Kevin Vandever (@kevinvandever) will celebrate the release of his wine Bin 504 2006 next week (see here: http://bin504.blogspot.com/2010/04/bin-504-2006-gumbo-release-party.html). And while I’d like to keep all of that wine to myself (it’s yummy) I figured I’d help Kevin out by introducing him to one of the biggest wine-lovers I know: Melanie Ofenloch (@melanieo). See her blog here: http://www.dallaswinechick.com/. Talk amongst yourselves, you winos!
That’s it for today. Oh, and I promise this blog is not going to be exclusively about FollowFriday!
