Follow These People for Good Conversation – April 16, 2010

by Jennifer Vides on April 16, 2010

in My Soapbox (AKA My Blog)

I confess: I have a really strong opinion about this. Social media? It’s all about the conversations that happen. Organic conversations. Authentic conversations. Conversations that result in life-long friendship, business relationships and healthy (and sometimes not-so-healthy) debates. I’ll write more about this later and the reasons why some marketing consultants and brands don’t do social media well.

But this post is about my #FollowFriday recommendations. I choose my recommendations based upon the conversations they are having and I place them in two categories:

#FF Groups: These are groups (pairs, trios or more) of people you should follow because their conversations with each other (and others) are interesting or entertaining. Sure they’re interesting or entertaining as individuals. But what I enjoy most is the richness of the conversations they are having with each other.

#FF Introductions: These are people who I think should be talking to each other because they have common interests. And, well, I think that watching them talk to each other would be…you guessed it…interesting or entertaining. I’m not one of those girls who gets jealous when her friends become friends with her other friends. I make these introductions because I want to see these relationships happen (but yes I do want to be invited in sometimes J).

Anyway, here go my recommendations for this week.

#FF Groups:

So @kevinvandever and @kerbehr are some of my first Twitter-turned-IRL friends. We met and bonded over college football – all of us lovers of the ACC. But Kevin and Kerri also work together. So they talk about sports, work, life and happy hour. Kevin likes UNC (go here for proof: http://mamideconstructed.blogspot.com/2009/11/unc-33-miami-24.html) and Kerri loves Clemson.

Now here’s a pair that…well I can’t even begin to explain it. @hbrumleve is a geek (he develops complex web sites and other geeky stuff, plus he has a Droid so he’s cool in my book) and he loves food. Buffalo wings, burgers…anything really. @ginidietrich is social media/digital communications/pr/healthy biking lady. They talk about all kinds of random stuff but also have good conversations about social media and other geeky stuff. Just follow, ok?

Then there’s the #chuchi gang. See, there was this girl who was annoying this guy and we named her Chuchi and then it became a thing and well… I can’t even explain it. Al I know is that I run in this #Chuchi pack with @anarc @ergeekgoddess @julito77 @xavierism @carogonza @TheOnlineMom @louispagan and half the time I have no idea what we’re talking about but it’s always fun. So much fun that @kevinvandever even created a bot for us. But in all seriousness: that group? Movers and shakers in the Latino social media community.

And then there’s @jessicagottlieb and @lolita. Good follows in their own right but these smart and sometimes saucy mamas tear it up with each other. Always interesting, entertaining and often fu-nneh.

#FF Introductions:

So this is a little dangerous but…I’ve recently found some Seminoles in my stream. Which is disturbing because I am a Hurricanes fan. And since college football season will be here any time now I think it’s time to out them. Because who doesn’t like to pick on the ‘Noles? So @kevinvandever, @kerbehr and @zweibz7 please meet these Noles who I think we should terrorize come football season: @bobmcnulty (no idea why) and @BradMilner (covers the Noles). Let the games begin.

I could go on for hours but it’s Friday night and the weekend must begin!

I’ve always loved this way of doing #FF and love your groups of reasons people should follow!

My dear IRL friend Harry and I should never be separated, so thanks for not doing it here (even though he likes wings).

Thanks JV!!
